100GBASE-SR4 Optical Modules: Supporting High-Speed Connectivity in AI and Storage Networks

Growing Bandwidth Demands in AI Infrastructure

AI workloads and data-intensive applications place increasing pressure on data center networks. Model training requires large volumes of data to move between compute nodes, while distributed storage systems continuously transfer datasets, checkpoints, and intermediate results across multiple servers. As the number of servers increases, network performance can become a limiting factor even when the compute resources themselves have sufficient capacity.

100GBASE-SR4 optical modules provide a short-reach 100GbE connectivity option for environments where high bandwidth is needed between nearby devices. They are particularly relevant to data center networks built around server clusters, storage nodes, and Ethernet switches. By supporting 100Gbps transmission over multimode fiber, these modules can help connect equipment within a rack, between adjacent racks, or across short distances within a data hall, depending on the fiber type and link requirements.

The value of a 100GBASE-SR4 connection is not simply its nominal data rate. In a cluster environment, network links must support frequent communication between many endpoints. Selecting suitable optical interfaces helps infrastructure teams build predictable connectivity between compute, storage, and network layers without deploying longer-reach optics where they are unnecessary.

Connecting Compute Nodes and Storage Resources

AI and high-performance computing environments often rely on multiple servers working together rather than operating as isolated systems. Training jobs may distribute workloads across several nodes, and each node may need to exchange data with other participants during execution. Storage infrastructure has a similar requirement: multiple compute servers may access shared datasets or write results to a distributed storage platform at the same time.

In an Ethernet-based architecture, 100GBASE-SR4 modules can be used for supported 100GbE links between servers and switches, or between compatible network devices in the same facility. The short-reach optical connection is useful when equipment is located close enough to use multimode fiber, while the switch fabric provides connectivity between nodes that are not directly connected to one another.

Storage networks can also benefit from 100GbE links when several servers access data concurrently. Higher-capacity connections can reduce the likelihood that an individual uplink becomes a bottleneck, although actual performance depends on the storage system, network oversubscription, server interfaces, and traffic patterns. A 100G optical link alone cannot guarantee faster application performance if disk throughput, CPU processing, congestion, or the storage protocol is the main constraint.

Understanding East-West Traffic in Cluster Networks

Traditional enterprise networks often emphasize traffic moving between users and external services. AI clusters and distributed storage systems generate substantial east-west traffic, meaning data moves between servers within the data center. This traffic may include synchronization between compute nodes, storage reads and writes, replication, and communication between application components.

For this reason, network capacity must be evaluated across the complete path rather than by looking at individual server connections in isolation. A server equipped with a 100GbE interface may still experience congestion if several servers share an oversubscribed uplink or if the switching fabric cannot provide sufficient aggregate bandwidth. When deploying 100GBASE-SR4 modules, network architects should assess the number of active endpoints, expected traffic volume, oversubscription ratio, and required throughput between network layers.

Latency and congestion behavior also matter. Some distributed workloads are sensitive to communication delays because a slow node can affect the progress of the entire job. Appropriate switch configuration, traffic management, and congestion-control mechanisms are therefore important alongside physical link capacity. For Ethernet-based AI environments, technologies such as RoCE may be used where supported by the network and application stack, but they require careful end-to-end configuration rather than relying on optical transceivers alone.

    Where 100GBASE-SR4 Fits in a Multi-Speed Network

Not every connection in an AI data center needs the same bandwidth or optical reach. A network may contain higher-speed links between core or spine switches, 100GbE connections for selected server and storage roles, and lower-speed interfaces for management or less demanding workloads. This mixed-speed approach allows organizations to allocate bandwidth according to application requirements and equipment capabilities.

100GBASE-SR4 can be a practical option for short links where 100GbE is sufficient and multimode fiber is already available. Its 850nm parallel-optics design uses four transmit lanes and four receive lanes, each operating at approximately 25Gbps. Typical IEEE 100GBASE-SR4 reach specifications are up to 70 meters over OM3 fiber and 100 meters over OM4 fiber, subject to the applicable link requirements.

For larger AI clusters, 100GbE may not provide enough bandwidth for every connection. High-performance GPU fabrics can require 200GbE, 400GbE, 800GbE, or higher-speed interfaces, depending on server design and workload scale. In such deployments, 100GBASE-SR4 may remain useful for selected infrastructure links, storage connections, or existing Ethernet segments, but it should not automatically be treated as the preferred interface for every GPU-to-GPU or accelerator-fabric connection. The decision should follow the bandwidth and topology requirements of the actual system.

Evaluating Deployment Costs and Operational Requirements

When planning a 100GbE upgrade, the total cost involves more than the price of optical modules. Network teams also need to account for compatible switches, fiber assemblies, installation labor, power consumption, spare inventory, and the operational effort required to maintain the links. The most suitable choice depends on both the immediate project and the existing infrastructure.

For short-distance connections, multimode SR4 optics may fit a deployment that already uses OM3 or OM4 fiber. Where the required reach exceeds the supported multimode distance, or where the network design calls for single-mode fiber, a different optical interface may be more appropriate. Comparing solutions based on actual link distance, cable availability, and supported host interfaces helps avoid paying for capabilities that the network does not need.

Before large-scale deployment, engineers should validate the transceiver against the intended switch or network adapter, confirm the correct fiber type and connector arrangement, and test link establishment under realistic operating conditions. Monitoring interface status and optical diagnostics where supported can also help teams identify degraded connections before they affect applications.

    Conclusion

100GBASE-SR4 optical modules can support short-reach 100GbE connectivity in AI infrastructure, distributed storage environments, and other data-intensive networks. Their role is most relevant where compute, storage, and switching equipment need reliable high-bandwidth connections within a limited physical area. However, overall cluster performance depends on more than the transceiver: network topology, switching capacity, congestion management, server interfaces, and storage performance all influence the result. By matching 100GBASE-SR4 to the right network segment, data center operators can use 100GbE where it offers a practical balance of bandwidth, reach, and deployment cost.
